Animal Care Specialist

The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of animals in the organization’s care. This role involves providing daily husbandry, monitoring animal behavior, assisting with medical treatments, and maintaining a clean, humane, and enriching environment. The Animal Care Specialist plays a vital role in supporting adoptions and educating the public about proper animal care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care for animals including feeding, watering, grooming, and exercise.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and animal areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and promptly report concerns.
  • Administer prescribed medications, vaccinations, or treatments under veterinary guidance.
  • Assist with intake procedures, including health assessments, vaccinations, and data entry.
  • Support adoption efforts by helping match animals with potential adopters and providing accurate information about each animal.
  • Educate visitors, volunteers, and adopters on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare practices.
  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during exams, treatments, or procedures as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of feeding, medical treatments, and animal observations.
  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies, safety procedures, and animal welfare standards.
  • Participate in enrichment programs to support animal socialization, training, and overall well-being.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in animal science, veterinary technology, or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in animal care, veterinary clinics, or shelters strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, health, and handling techniques.
  • Ability to safely and compassionately handle animals of various sizes, species, and temperaments.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform cleaning tasks.
  • Passion for animal welfare and commitment to the organization’s mission.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to animals, including those who may be frightened, aggressive, or ill.
  • Fast-paced shelter environment requiring compassion, patience, and flexibility.
  • May include weekends, evenings, and holidays as part of a regular schedule.
